Untitled's We're Not Alone....What Do People Think of this Track...Relative to...
the album's overall concept? At first, I recognized it as a dope track in itself: nice beat, smooth hook, Nas flows well on it, and it contains some lyrical gems....but...initially, I was a little perplexed regarding the relevancy of the message, like I said in the Thread's title, relative to the overall concept of Untitled...I was left thinking: is the album better with this track? Does it add anything to the message of the album?
Now, I've heard people argue that the "role" this track plays amongst the other tracks on the album, is to try and expand our perspective, that it tries to introduce content that causes us to take a step back and shift our focus beyond the immediacy of our "earthly" existence, and to remind us that "we're not alone," which will in turn encourage to focus on our similarities instead our differences.....
I don't know though....the chorus and bridges do more to drive this interpretation home than Nas' actual lyrics...So, what purposes do Nas' lyrics serve? What do people think of this track and the way that it is constructed lyrically? What is its message, ultimately?

Well, he's talking about a lot of different stuff. the verses are packed full of different things, but they don't REALLY connect with the message of the chorus imo. idk....like i said, i don't know what to make of this track really. It sounds good, on the one hand, but on the other hand, it does'nt seem to add much to the album as a whole. With that said, though, I'd of taken a few other songs off the album before this one.....
Depth...did you like Untitled?

most of what he's talking about is inspired by a chapter in the book "Behold a Pale Horse" by William Cooper. The chapter is the most controversial part of the book, but i suggest everybody read it.

he also drops the name Ivan Van Sertima who wrote the book "They Came Before Columbus" which talks about the African influence and presence in "the new world"

Yeah, i remember h-rap droppin insight on this stuff in his name drops and bios thread.....but utlimately, i just think the song could have been executed a little better. Instead of being all over the place with his subject matter, it would have been nice to see him go in depth with either one or two things.....still.....do you think his lyrics correspond well with the message of the hook?

it could've been put together better but the lyrics def do match the hook.

It's dope song, but I agree that it doesn't really connect with the rest of the album when analyzing Nas' lyrics in the song in regard to the rest of the album. I think that song would've worked better if Nas had applied this concept to addressing how other ethnicities share in the plight of being minorities or something. Nas took it to a whole other extreme by talking about aliens, UFO's and about how we're being watched and what not.

In this discussion, I think the placement of the track on the album is also quite important. Untitled is an album in many ways filled of contrasts, anger and passion. So perhaps Nas felt that the album's ending needed some sort of unifying connection between people, especially before leading into the finale "Black President". Sure, "We Are Not Alone" is certainly not very cohesive and focused, however I do feel that, by commenting on different issues or theories that afflict most of us all as humans today, Nas does send out the message that "we need to unite together"... How? By supporting a Black President! Hence the connection, which IMO works.
Either that or Nas just wanted an excuse to go on some conspiracy shit. Regardless, I'm not too crazy about that song.
